1

A Special Name

Banyamulenge means "people of Mulenge." Mulenge is a beautiful highland region in eastern Congo — green hills, cool air, and wide open pastures. When you say you are Umunyamulenge, you are saying: my family's story is connected to this land.

💡 Fun Fact

The word "Mulenge" refers to the hills where our ancestors lived and raised cattle for many generations!

2

Where Is Home?

Our homeland is in South Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Places like Minembwe and Bijombo are at the heart of Banyamulenge life. Even if you were born far away — in America, Europe, or elsewhere — this land is part of who you are.

3

People Everywhere

Today, Banyamulenge families live all over the world. This is called the diaspora — communities living outside the homeland while keeping culture, language, and traditions alive. You are part of a global family!

💡 Fun Fact

No matter where you live, you can still learn Kinyarwanda, hear our stories, and celebrate our culture.
